As of next Monday, the ATP World Tour will have a new World Number Three: Juan Martín del Potro. Perhaps this best career ranking did not come in the ideal way for the Argentine. After all, he will reach this milestone following the defeat of the current number three, Alexander Zverev, who was unable to defend his Canadian Masters title. However, it is more than deserved a position for the 29-year-old, who has been playing his best tennis this season.
Since the beginning of 2018, del Potro has accumulated a record of 35 wins and 9 defeats, has won two titles, including his first career Masters 1000 shield, has reached two other finals, on top of reaching the semifinals of the French Open and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. Furthermore, his worst result so far this year has been a second-round defeat in Delray Beach.
A record worthy of the third best player in the world.
Del Potro fifth top 3 Argentine in singles
Juan Martín del Potro’s accession to the top 3 of the ATP World Tour makes him the fifth Argentine player to do so in singles (men and women combined).
On Monday, the Tower of Tandil will add his name to those of Guillermo Vilas, Gabriela Sabatini, Guillermo Coria, and David Nalbandian, who have all been among the three best players of their respective time at some point.
From the verge of retiring to the sport’s podium
In Toronto, a day before announcing that he was withdrawing from the tournament due to a left wrist issue, del Potro came back on his return to the top five after the difficult two years he spent battling his wrist problems:
“Three years ago, [I considered] quitting tennis, stop playing, because I had been suffering a lot of — I was depressed for a couple of months because I couldn’t find a way to fix the wrist problems. But now you can imagine how happy I am playing tennis again and being in the top 5 position again after a long time, winning titles, playing maybe my best tennis ever. I’m having one of my best seasons this year, and it’s amazing.
“I never expected to be in this moment again after all my problems. So I just want to keep enjoying this second chance of the tennis life.”
After all that happened to him, we can only imagine the happiness that he is currently feeling.
