The French Open 2017 is getting under way this Sunday, in Paris. Culminating point of the European clay swing, the second Grand Slam of the season promises to bring us many emotions and its lot of popcorn matches, starting on day 1.
The return of Petra Kvitova
Six months after having had her hands sliced by a thief during a home invasion, former number two Petra Kvitova makes her much anticipated return to the courts.
For the occasion, the Czech will have the honour of opening the tournament on Philippe-Chatrier, as she will face Julia Boserup of the United States, at 11:00 local time (5:00 EDT).
Win or lose, the result does not matter. Just seeing the powerful lefty on the court is worth the early waking time.
Other French Open 2017 day 1 popcorn matches
Following Kvitova’s comeback match, world number one Angelique Kerber will make her Roland Garros début. The German will try to turn her misfortunes around against a very difficult opponent, Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova.
Second on Court 3 (starting at approximately 13:00 local time – 7:00 EDT), 38-year-old Ivo Karlovic will face a player 20 years his junior: the Greek up-and-coming talent Stefanos Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas, a qualifier, will play the first Grand Slam main draw of his burgeoning career.
At approximately 14:30 local time (8:30 EDT), on Suzanne-Lenglen, sixth seed Dominic Thiem will face Bernard Tomic. Should the Aussie come motivated, this match will be a cracker.
Around the same time, eleventh seed Grigor Dimitrov will play against local Stéphane Robert on Chatrier. This match will be followed by an all French duel between Lucas Pouille (seeded 16) and wild card Julien Benneteau.
