Ivo Karlovic caused a mini surprise on Tuesday evening when he upset Milos Raonic 7-6(1), 7-6(1) in the second round of the Coupe Rogers.
It is not necessarily that the Canadian played a bad match. In fact, his tennis was decent, considering that he was playing his first match since losing to Nick Kyrgios in Wimbledon. However, the Croatian is on a roll and playing superb tennis lately, and he fully earned the win he notched.
“It is unbelievable”, said Karlovic about beating the local hero. “He’s top 10. Obviously it means a lot to me. I was moving unbelievable this evening. Everything was going my way. So I’m really, really happy with my performance tonight. [In the tiebreaks], I was really focused and aggressive. I was hitting forehands unbelievable. I was running around. I mean, everything was going my way. That’s why it was this score in the tiebreaks.”
There is one thing to say about the recent performances of Ivo Karlovic: at 36 years of age, he is playing the best tennis of his career. We could not resist asking him if he felt like he were an old wine, getting better with age. He agreed, and has no intention of stopping there: “Yes, yes, I don’t feel any less strong or fast than when I was younger. I feel really good. Also, I don’t know if it’s the reason, I begin later a little bit. I didn’t reach top 100 when I was 18, 19. I reached little bit later. That’s why I’m not like used up.
“I feel good. As long as I will be healthy and my ranking will be up like this, there is no reason to stop.”
In the course of his win, Ivo Karlovic also achieved an important milestone.
In the first point of the seventh game of the second set, Karlovic hit the 10,000th ace of his career, a bomb down the T, making him even closer to fellow Croatian Goran Ivanisevic’s record.
Is that a record he is aiming to surpass? “Yeah, of course, that is my goal”, he said. “I would hope that it will be this year. If not, it’s okay also if it’s next year. Hopefully I will be able to do it, be healthy enough, and hopefully it will be soon.”
