This Sunday, in Montreal, Simona Halep will be on double duty. Not only is she in the singles final for the second consecutive year; she will also, afterwards, play the first doubles final of her career.
“I’m a little bit dead now”, admitted the fifth seed. “The feeling of winning, it’s always great. I’m still motivated to play [on Sunday]. I’ll give my everything, everything I have, to win the matches. I know it is not going to be easy. But it’s the last day of the tournament, so I will enjoy it. Of course, I want to win the trophy. It’s the second time and I really want it.”
In singles, Halep will face Madison Keys, who stormed into the finals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kristina Kucova. In doubles, she and her countrywoman Monica Niculescu will play against fourth seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
“She’s a very strong player”, said the Romanian about her singles rival. “She hits the ball very strong. Her serve is good. It will be not like today: many rallies. In Wimbledon, the points were shorter. So I expect that I will not have a good rhythm tomorrow because she can hit a winner, and you don’t see the ball. She can miss sometimes. I have to stay focused for every ball, not to be upset like today, and just to try to do my style: to be aggressive, what I’m doing the best, to stay aggressive, hit the ball, open the court.”
Keys also praised Halep’s game: “She’s playing really well”, she said. “She gets a lot of balls back, which is one of her biggest strengths. But her ability to get that extra ball and become, you know, the one that’s in charge of the point is what she’s so good at. I’m going to have to really be good at making those extra balls and also just knowing she is going to get a lot of balls back, and not get frustrated.”
The Coupe Rogers singles final will start at 13:00 and, after a period of rest, will be followed by the doubles championship match.
Will double duty turn into double triumph for Simona Halep?
A bit of joking from Halep
When she talked about her deep doubles run, the fifth player in the WTA rankings could not resist joking a little:
“When I started the tournament, I said the money from the prize money doubles I will do shopping. Now I have enough, so I will enjoy. Maybe that’s why I kept winning.”
We can point her to some nice stores, if she needs to!
