There will be a few surprise quarter-finalists at this year’s Coupe Rogers, in Montreal.
On Thursday, Daria Kasatkina continued to impress by upsetting seventh seed Roberta Vinci 7-5, 6-3. “It was, of course, a tough match. She’s a young player. She’s an intelligent player”, said Vinci, 33, about the 19-year-old Russian.
Then, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ousted fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1. The world N°19 was, simply, too much of the 2014 champion.
In the evening, Madison Keys had the better of a tired Venus Williams 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-3, whereas the fairy tale continued for Kristina Kucova.
In the late evening, the 26-year-old, who came from the qualifications defeated Eugenie Bouchard 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Same as she did in her two previous matches (against Yanina Wickmayer and Carla Suárez Navarro), the Slovakian came back from a set down to claim the victory. “I’m very happy”, said Kucova after the match. “Also I’m very tired. But it’s a very good feeling. This is my best moment so far in my tennis career.”
On Friday evening, Kucova will play her first WTA Premier quarter-finals against Johanna Konta. The Brit defeated Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-2 for her seventh consecutive win.
