Every year, the seeds for the third Grand Slam of the season come out on the Wednesday prior to the start of The Championships.

And every year, on the Wednesday prior to the start of Wimbledon, there are many who express their discontent with that list, calculated by a formula which is meant to mirror each player’s grass court performances.

This formula, which only applies to the men’s draw, exists since 2001, when the committee in charge of choosing the seeds ceased to exist, and is applied thus:

Ranking points on 16 June, 2014

+

100% of the grass points from the last 12 months

+

75% of the grass points from the best grass tournament in the 12 months prior to that

Quite a bit of mathematics, but in the end, the result is not that complicated and, more importantly, gives a much more just image of what the Wimbledon seeds should be, taking into account that there is only one month of grass-court tennis during the season.

The 2014 seeds

Here is the list of seeds for Wimbledon 2014. The numbers in parenthesis are those of the current rankings for each player. Taking the formula into account, it is only logical that Andy Murray, among other things defending Wimbledon champion, 2012 runner-up and Olympic champion, would be seeded number 3 (+2). The same goes for Novak Djokovic, last year’s runner-up, who thus takes the number 1 seed, whereas the current ATP World Tour rankings number one, Rafael Nadal, is “relegated” to number 2, having lost in the second round in 2012 (and not having played the London Olympics) and having lost in the first round of The Championships last year.
