The last Grand Slam of the season is finally upon us, and in view of the draw, we can be in for many surprises again this year.
The first round will kick off on Monday, with both men’s and women’s top seeds in action, and several very interesting matches to watch:
- For the last tournament of his career, Mardy Fish will open play on Grandstand at 11:00 against Marco Cecchinato.
- Last year’s runner-up and champion will play the first two matches on Louis Armstrong. Kei Nishikori will face Benoît Paire at 11:00, followed by the clash between defending champion Marin Cilic and qualifier Guido Pella.
- World number one Novak Djokovic will begin his Flushing Meadows campaign against João Souza, at approximately 14:30, on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
However, the match of the day is, without a doubt, the one which will oppose Rafael Nadal to Borna Coric. Last evening match on Ashe (at approximately 21:00), this is an encounter which might keep us glued to our screens. The young Croatian has won the only meeting between the two, last year, in Basel. He is coming into the U.S. Open after losing to eventual champion Kevin Anderson in the Winston Salem quarter-finals, and will have nothing to lose against his illustrious rival. Nadal, for his part, will be looking for a confidence boost, he who is having one of the most difficult seasons of his career, results-wise. A match we will definitely not miss!
