The last U.S. Open round-of-16 encounters brought a major surprise, as Kevin Anderson stunned third seed Andy Murray in four sets (including a tiebreak bagel in the fourth) to reach the quarter-finals of a major for the first time in his career.
Today marks the beginning of the quarter-finals, with the top half of both the men and women’s draws in action, and all the matches will be played on Arthur Ashe Stadium:
- The first match will be the battle of the unseeded ladies, as Roberta Vinci will face Kristina Mladenovic. Vinci has had an extra day of rest, since she benefited from Eugenie Bouchard’s withdrawal. As for Mladenovic, she will try to continue on her fabulous U.S. Open run. This match will start at 12:00.
- Following the encounter between Vinci and Mladenovic, defending champion Marin Cilic will try to advance to the semifinals against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Frenchman is yet to lose serve, or a set, in the course of the tournament. As for Cilic, he is fighting hard to try and retain his crown. So far, it has worked. Can he continue?
- Starting at 19:00, the Williams sisters will face off for a semifinal spot. Serena is trying to complete the Grand Slam, and her sister Venus could become the one to stop her. A difficult match for both.
- To conclude the day, Novak Djokovic will face Feliciano López. The Spaniard has never won a match against the world number one, but has been playing great tennis since the start of the summer. He had a streak of luck when he faced Mardy Fish in the second round, but has been nearly untouchable since. As for Djokovic, he might have dropped a set for the first time in the tournament in the last round, but he is still is nearly unbeatable.
