After a day which saw the emotional triumph of Maria Sharapova over world number two Simona Halep, in a match that lived up to the expectations, the first round of the US Open will come to an end this Tuesday at Flushing Meadows.
World number one Karolina Pliskova will start the day on Arthur Ashe. The 2016 runner-up will face Magda Linette at 11:00 EDT. Her match will be followed by the defending champion’s début, as Angelique Kerber will play against Naomi Osaka.
US Open Day 2 matches to follow
A lot of matches appeal to us, for various reasons, making it difficult to elect one to follow in particular. There will be the all-Aussie battle between Nick Kyrgios and John Millman, for one. The 100% Italian match between Fabio Fognini and Stefano Travaglia is also very appealing. Furthermore, at the start of the day, we will be treated to a nice one-handed backhand duel between Richard Gasquet and Leonardo Mayer. World number one Rafa Nadal will also be in action, as well as Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem, and Juan Martín del Potro.
EDIT (15:55): All matches except for those on Arthur Ashe Stadium (which has a roof) have been cancelled due to rain. Which means that Wednesday’s schedule will be more than packed!
As we mentioned, many matches will be worth the watch on the second day of the US Open (except for the first match of the day, all the hours are approximate):
Dominic Thiem vs Alex De Minaur (11:00 EDT) Richard Gasquet vs Leonardo Mayer (11:00 EDT) Juan Martín del Potro vs Henri Laaksonen (12:30 EDT) Fabio Fognini vs Stefano Travaglia (12:30 EDT)
- Rafael Nadal vs Dusan Lajovic (14:00 EDT)
Anett Kontaveit vs Lucie Safarova (16:00 EDT) Nick Kyrgios vs John Millman (17:00 EDT)
- Roger Federer vs Frances Tiafoe (20:30 EDT)
