The second day of action at the US Open has been one to forget, as the rain interrupted play early on and did not relent, forcing the tournament to cancel all of the day’s matches except for those on Arthur Ashe Stadium, which has a roof.
In the remaining matches, both world N°1, Karolina Pliskova and Rafael Nadal, advanced rather comfortably. Defending champion Angelique Kerber, on the other hand, was dryly shown the exit door by an inspired and impressive Naomi Osaka. In the evening, Roger Federer suffered, but prevailed in five sets against a superb Frances Tiafoe.
Due to the rain, the first round of the tournament is yet to be completed, which will be done first thing on Wednesday. Following those matches, the second round will be played for the bottom half of both draws.
US Open Day 3 matches to follow
As a direct consequence of Tuesday’s weather, the US Open schedule for Day 3 is completely packed! For that reason, a great many number of matches will be to follow, many simultaneously.
From the matches we had featured on Tuesday, there will still be the all-Aussie battle between Nick Kyrgios and John Millman, for one. The 100% Italian match between Fabio Fognini and Stefano Travaglia remains also very appealing. Furthermore, at the start of the day, we will be treated to the end of the one-handed backhand duel between Richard Gasquet and Leonardo Mayer.
In the evening, the men get the last match for the third straight consecutive day. However, it once again promises a great showdown, this time between eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and 18-year-old Canadian sensation Denis Shapovalov.
Without a doubt, many matches will be worth the watch on the third day of the US Open (except for the first match of each session, all the hours are approximate):
- Dominic Thiem vs Alex De Minaur (11:00 EDT)
- Richard Gasquet vs Leonardo Mayer (11:00 EDT)
- Nick Kyrgios vs John Millman (12:00 EDT)
- Fabio Fognini vs Stefano Travaglia (12:30 EDT)
- Juan Martín del Potro vs Henri Laaksonen (13:00 EDT)
