Following her fabulous run at last week’s Coupe Rogers, where she reached the final (her best Canadian result at her first time in Montreal – she is 0-4 in Toronto), and has benefited from the support of the crowd in each of her matches, Venus Williams has declared her love for the city and the province, even announcing that she will play the tournament in Quebec City later this fall.
“I felt like I was from, you know, Québec”, she said. “I might be a long‑lost soul from Québec. This is my favourite city. I love it. My favorite city has always been Rome. As I’ve been going around the city, I’m like, Oh, my God, this is really competing with Rome. I just love it here. So I can’t wait to come back. As much as I love Toronto, I wish the women’s tournament was here every year.
“Just seeing the fans, too. I think I was hitting some balls on Sunday, and I couldn’t believe the massive number of fans here. I was like, My God, I’ve never seen anything like it, even at a major. Just overwhelming support for tennis here. Makes you feel real good about what you’re doing on the court.”
A tournament and a crowd can’t wish for a better tribute, especially from such a legend!
